Night Fire and Forever Friend

Greg Powell writes Night Fires Forever Friends, a tribute to Deborah

Night Fire and Forever Friend

For Deborah on her birthday

Our love dance never ends
Love shining from within
Soul flavor of cinnamon
Night fire and forever friend

Eyes first touched in bible study class
Face glowing sunshine/ skin like brass
I dropped Jah wisdom/ thankful you were there
Kept my eyes on mission/ tried not to stare
But you were fine so fine from front to behind
Smile so refined/ face gorgeous and kind
Wisdom in your mind like gold to mine
Hoped to get to know you/ spend quality time
My car broke down/ I needed a ride
You offered transportation/ I came inside
Drove me home/ our connection shook me to bone
When we said goodbye I felt weirdly alone
Got the digits and we made zones on the phone
Poured into each other/ my mind was blown
You put sugar in my bowl like Nina Simone
Admired your strength/ your foundation was strong
I knew you were a woman I would never do wrong
Date after date,
day after day,
in our garden we played
my inhibitions you slayed
we worshipped and prayed
my cool poise you frayed
Loves infinite array was on display
I knew I love you always
Beyond our days of old and gray.

Our love dance never ends
Love shining from within
Soul flavor of cinnamon
Night fire and forever friend

We created our own music in songs of crooners
I hoped the set the mood to taste the juicy fruit sooner
But the sweetest gratification follows the sweetest delay
So we danced 360 of satisfaction to relay
Danced to Sassy, Joe Williams, Trane and Lady Day
Our love a blooming riot a flowering melee
Met your Royal Moms our wise Matriarch
Met Big Ma whose smile was like pie to the heart
Met Grandma Davis’ aristocratic style
Met Granddad Parham as sturdy as the Nile
My Blood kin tossed you love in piles
Looking back years like miles and miles
I got on my knee and said Baby please
Would you consent to be my forever squeeze
I plead for the chance to meet your every need
I'll be your paramedic when life make you bleed

Our love dance never ends
Love shining from within
Soul flavor of cinnamon
Night fire and forever friend

Daddy said she the one and my Daddy wise
So when we married nobody was surprised
We were bound before birth our souls surmised
You orchestrated nuptials under Jamaican skies
To tones of Dinah Washington and Milt with Strings
Trane blowing sweetly while Johnny Hartman sings
Ocean breeze while hammock swings
My sweet Black Angel spread her wings
We danced our dance
Through years and joys and tears that sear
New ancestors gone but still near
Striving by faith through life’s surprises
Beholding your beauty a thousand sun rises
The love that gave birth to two sons of the earth
I love you with all riches life is worth.

There's a series called 'Love Lyrics' dedicated to Deborah, and you'll find some of those poems here, like this one, 'Give Love to Life'
